This is the first of our 4 seasonal handicap runs of 2019 and this year the courses will start and finish at our HQ at Ackworth Cricket Club.
Traditionally the race distance is 10 miles but to reflect the diversity in members' experience we also have a shorter course of about 5 miles. The 10 mile distance is a qualifying event for Age Grading Awards (you have to race over 10k, 10m and a half marathon in 2019).
Our independent handicapper works out an expected run time for each runner - for example runner A is given 90 mins, runner B is given 80 mins and runner C 95 mins for the 10m course. Runners are set off according to their expected run time, the slowest first, the fastest last. In the above example, runner C sets off first, runner A 5 mins later and runner B 15 mins later (than C, 10mins later than runner B). If they all run exactly to their predicted time they will finish at the same time. The winner is the first back - they will have performed best relative to their target time. You don't have to be the fastest runner to win - you just have to perform best against your own given time
A trophy is awarded to the Handicap winner and to the best performance by the opposite sex to the winner - i.e. if a lady is first back, the first male will also get a trophy and vice versa.
We also award trophies for the shorter course based on the same rules.
START TIMES will be posted here nearer the date. It is anticipated that runners will finish at around 11:30 am.
Each Handicap is also an event in the 2019 Grand Prix. Points are awarded based on run time with again those doing the 10m course counting first.
The 10m course is two laps, the 5m one. We go out along Dando Way, past the Turkey Farm to Station Road Hemsworth - through an estate up to Wakefield Road Hemsworth - towards Kinsley - oast the water park entrance back towards the Turkey Farm. Back to Wakefield Road Ackworth via Dicky Sykes Lane. The short course goues straight back to the cricket club, the 10 milers do a second lap.
There will be marshals and signs.
