Peco 5: Otley Chevin 6 March 2011

A great effort all round

The last event of the series was held at Otley Chevin. This is a good cross country venue with mainly decent trails, and three testing sharp climbs on each of the two laps. The weather was just right with some pleasant sunshine at times.

There was a lot at stake in terms of which of our two principal ladies would win the series, whether the men could snatch second place and gain promotion as well as individual category places.

Ladies Results

Karen Ball went into the race just 0.5 point ahead of Victoria Burrows-Bilton, both knowing that the title would go to one or the other. Both again ran brilliantly with Karen finishing 5th and Victoria 6th, but who would be the overall winner? This went to Victoria by the slenderest of margins, again just 0.5 point. The best 4 race results in the series count.

Rachel Cooke finished 37th and ever improving Jenny Dews 38th. Next home was Ann Rhodes (61st) followed by Maria McDonald-Leach (62nd) and not too far behind, Emma Smith in 72nd spot and Gail Wrangles in 76th spot.

For clarity, Maria would like to point out that she finished 122.4 metres ahead of Stewart.

Mens Results

We needed a strong turnout if we were going to have a chance of promotion and members didn't let us down. Charlie Lines was again up with the front-runners and was our first back in 11th spot, a position that secured him top spot in his age category. We was well supported by Aiden Ball (27th), Steve Wigglesworth (53rd), Liam Somerfield (63rd), Andrew Mascarenhas (72nd), Craig Tipton (84th), Adrian Leach (107th), Chris Taylor (124th)- all counting.

Our other finishers were Glyn Jones (127th), Martyn Stearn (128th), Paul Zywicki (143rd), Roy Young (144th), Stewart Haigh (163rd), Ian Hill (164th), Barry Sinar (178th), Jeff Denton (182nd), Brian Dodd (183rd) and John Bell (184th).

Mens Team Results

We finished in second place and not too far behind the winners on the day, and the series, Saltaire Striders. The excellent scoring helped us to draw level on ponts for the series with Bradford Airedale and beat them on count-back for the promotion spot.

In the vets league, we finished 5th on the day, but 4th on the series - again an excellent club result.

Ladies Team Results

There were some strong teams out on the day, however our ladies finished in 4th spot in the very competitive premier league and secured 4th for the series, just one point off third place. It is a great credit to them all that we had a solid performance after gaining promotion last year.

We also secured 4th spot in the Vets league and with Karen and Jenny moving up a category, we could well do even better next season.
