The competition started with the Winter handicap back on 2 January and culminated on the 20 November with the Abbey Dash. There was an average turnout of 27 members per event, with the first run of the year proving the most popular (34). For the first time, we included the Trunce 9 race series with the best time from any counting. 25 competed in one or more races. A total of 81 club members scored points in at least 1 race (this included anyone joining throughout the year). Three people, Adrian leach, Maria McDonald-Leach and Janet Davis managed to compete in all 12 events; Martyn Stearn finished in 11 and 5 others did 10 - all maximising their points totals. With the excellent growth in new members, next year should see even more taking part and even more competition for the top places.
Andrew Mascarenhas confirmed his top spot by being first home in the Abbey Dash - with a series points total only 4 off a maximum possible score. The battle for second spot went down to the wire with Adrian Leach trying to hold off a strong challenge at the Abbey from Martyn Stearn. Martyn did his best by being second back, but Adrian's 5th spot meant he held on to second place by a single point.
Gail Wrangles was the leading lady in 7th place - with a dramatic improvement in scoring in the second half of the year as her pace increased.
Gail Wrangles duly made it "in the last furlong" to overtake both Maria McDonald-Leach and Janet Davis in the last race. This league has produced the closest finish with just 10 points separating Gail from 4th placed Emma Smith. What a competition there will be next year!
Janet Davis was home and dry with two races to go, but still turned out in the last race to reinforce her status. There was a danger for Maria McDonald-Leach that Gail Wrangle's late charge would catch her. However a sub 50 pb to counter Gails pb and the ability to 'drop' a lower score meant she finished with a 2 point advantage.
Martyn Stearn had already secured top spot before he crowned his year with a pb at the Abbey (age adjusted time 33:52!). Adrian Leach has looked secure in second spot, but was overhauled by Stewart Haigh who had a decent run (age adjusted time 38:06). Stewart would like to thank Paul Zywicki for turning out and pushing Adrian back a point, and other faster M60 guys who stayed at home!
